Its story

Within the sails of Vela burns a restless blue beacon whose light took nearly eleven hundred and fifty years to cross the void. When it set out, monks copied manuscripts by candlelight and the first Romanesque churches were rising in stone. Its brightness rises and falls in a barely perceptible rhythm —pulses, breathes, pulses again—, a reminder that no star is ever wholly still. It burns hotter and far more luminously than the Sun, an adolescent furnace beside the calm middle age of our local star.
