Mu-1 Chamaeleontis is a white star nestled near the southern celestial pole, in a constellation so austral that it never rises above the European horizon. About three hundred and seventy-five light-years away, it turns slowly around an axis very close to the pivot around which the entire southern sky appears to revolve. It is one of those almost motionless points that only patient astronomers at the world's edge can study.
Where it is and when to see it
Mu 1 Chamaeleon lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
