What is Ras Elased Australis
Ras Elased Australis marks the southern jaw of Leo, drawn from the Arabic «raʾs al-asad», «the lion's head». It is a yellow star of the same spectral type as the Sun, yet vastly older and larger: a giant that has long since left its prime. Its light takes some 247 years to reach us — a quiet reminder that every constellation is a tableau stitched together from many different epochs.
Where it is and when to see it
Ras Elased Australis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
