What is HIP 47204
Two hundred and thirty-three light years: the photon observed today from this white A-type in Vela left around 1793, during the French revolutionary Terror and the dawn of the modern republic. Its surface, far hotter than the Sun's, emits the bluish glow characteristic of its class. It dwells in a southern constellation barely visited by classical mythology.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 47204 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
