23 Hydrae is an orange K-type giant in the vast water serpent, the most extensive constellation in the sky. Its warm hue, born of a surface cooler than the Sun's, places it in an advanced stage of its evolution. Its light crosses space for nearly two and a half centuries before being recorded by our instruments.

23 Hydrae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
