What is HIP 43142
In the immense Hydra, the water serpent that coils through half the sky, shines this white A-type star at 401 light-years. Its light set out while the Netherlands was living its Golden Age and Rembrandt was composing his chiaroscuros. With a hotter and more electric surface than the Sun, it is one of those white stars that seem moulded in alabaster.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 43142 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
