What is Omicron 1 Cancri

Omicron-1 Cancri is a white A-type star in the Crab, about 149 light-years away —a distance strikingly close to that of the Hyades, although it does not belong to that cluster. Cancer is a zodiacal constellation of modest brightness but rich in history: it hosts Praesepe, the Manger, one of the oldest open clusters known to Greek astronomers. This star appears as one of the secondary points sketching out the Crab.

Omicron 1 Cancri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 54° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 65° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 41° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 75° S.
