Its blue light crosses space from a colossal distance, far beyond the familiar bounds of the Milky Way. It is a B-type star, scorching and bluish-white, and variable as well: its brightness changes over time, like a distant lighthouse flickering across cosmic oceans. It belongs to Vela —the sail of Argo—, the ancient celestial ship broken into constellations by Lacaille in the 18th century.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 43082 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
