It burns in Vela with the violent blue of class B stars, young and massive suns whose light has tones closer to electric fire than to solar yellow. Its glow arrived after a 2,609-year journey: when it set out, the troops of Alexander the Great had not yet crossed the Hellespont and republican Rome was just one Italian city among many. It lives fast, burns hard, and its brightness bears witness to a nuclear furnace far hotter than our Sun's.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 41639 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
