What is HIP 38474
In Monoceros, some 130 light-years away, shines this yellow-white type F star. Its light set out around 1896, the year Becquerel discovered radioactivity by accident and flung open a new physics. Slightly hotter and more luminous than the Sun, it shares that tempered ivory tone with which the ancients imagined the mythical unicorn's horn crossing the winter skies.

HIP 38474 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
