In the ancient Puppis, the stern of the ship Argo, beats a blue variable star some 1400 light-years away. Its light set out around the year 626, when the Byzantine empire was withstanding the siege of Constantinople and the eastern Christian world was barely holding on. Hot and youthful, its surface ripples with subtle pulses that slowly shake its atmosphere of ionised hydrogen.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 37345 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
