What is Wasat

Wasat sits at the geometric centre of Gemini, its name from the Arabic «al-wasaṭ» meaning, quite simply, «the middle». A yellow-white F-class star 60 light-years away, it is a near neighbour close to the Sun in colour and temperature. The ecliptic passes by here: the Moon, the planets, and in 1930 the discovery of Pluto itself, all happened at a tiny angular distance from this otherwise unassuming star.

Where it is and when to see it

Wasat lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 60° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 71° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 34° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 68° S.

It ranks no. 9 in brightness among the 74 stars of Gemini in our catalogue. To find it, start from Pollux, the brightest: it lies about 8° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
