What is Furud

Furud, 'the solitary one' in Arabic, marks the rear paw of the Greater Dog, set apart from the nearby blaze of Sirius. Despite the name, it is in fact a hot, luminous blue star about 362 light-years away — its apparent restraint is just a matter of distance. The light crossing the winter sky tonight set out around 1664, in the heart of Europe's scientific revolution.

Where it is and when to see it

Furud lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
