What is HIP 29679

In the Greater Dog glows an orange giant whose light took 738 years to cross space. When it left, the Castilian kings were pushing the Reconquista forward and Alfonso X was gathering Christian, Jewish and Muslim scholars in Toledo to translate the knowledge of the known world. A class-K sun, cooler than ours and well into its evolutionary maturity, it leaves a coppery glow beneath Sirius that enriches the winter cluster of the Great Dog.

HIP 29679 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
