In Orion, where the celestial hunter unfolds his belt and sword, it shines with the smooth white of class A stars. The light observed set out 322 years ago: when it did, the Bourbons had just settled on the Spanish throne after the War of Succession and in England Newton was finishing his last works on optics. It is a discreet star within the dazzling figure of Orion, with no companion or pulsations, faithful to its white light with the patience of centuries.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 27713 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
