What is HIP 27243

Pictor, the painter's easel, holds upon its canvas this orange K-type star, cooler and older than the Sun. Its light began travelling around 1556, the year Emperor Charles V abdicated in Brussels and imperial Europe changed hands. That copper ember crossed nearly five centuries of darkness before settling onto today's telescopes.

HIP 27243 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
