What is 122 Tauri
122 Tauri is a white-yellow F-type star in the Bull, moving away from us at more than forty kilometres per second —a sizeable radial velocity, enough to shift its spectral lines measurably towards the red—. Its glow crosses just over one hundred and fifty years to reach Earth, leaving when refracting telescopes were starting to rival the great Victorian reflectors.
Where it is and when to see it
122 Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
