What is 29 Orionis

29 Orionis is a yellow G-type giant burning some 157 light-years away, perched at the southern shoulder of the celestial hunter. Older than the Sun and well into its giant phase, it shines as a warm yellow note among the icy blue chorus of Rigel and Saiph that defines this corner of the sky. The photons reaching us tonight departed during the European Renaissance.

Where it is and when to see it

29 Orionis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 31° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 41° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 64° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 82° N.
