In Taurus, neighbour to the red Aldebaran, a white A-class sun with variable brightness pulses 171.6 light-years away. Its faint throb reminds us that, seen up close, stars are almost never still. The light we now perceive departed when Lord Rosse's telescopes in Ireland were beginning to reveal the spiral shape of the first nebulae, then called «island universes».
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 24019 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
