In Lepus, the hare fleeing at Orion's feet, shines an orange star, calm and old. Its light crossed some 249 years before reaching us: it set out around 1777, when the United States adopted its first flag and the La Pérouse expedition was being readied in Brest. Cooler than the Sun, it is a patient ember beneath the celestial hunter.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 23668 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
