What is 1 Leporis
1 Leporis is an orange giant about four hundred and sixty-eight light-years away, in the small figure of the Hare crouching at the feet of Orion the hunter. Its K-type light, warm and deep, has crossed a sky dominated by far more famous giants —Rigel, Sirius, Betelgeuse— without losing its quiet character. The constellation, modest in size, hides treasures for those who look slowly.
Where it is and when to see it
1 Leporis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
