Tabit belongs to the «shield» of Orion, the small stars the celestial hunter holds up against the charging bull. A yellow-white F-class star, slightly hotter and brighter than our Sun, it lies just 26 light-years away. That nearness makes it an intimate neighbour by galactic standards: its light, departed barely a little over a quarter of a century ago, has crossed a tiny stretch of the cosmos before reaching the eye.
Where it is and when to see it
Tabit lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
