What is Chamukuy

Chamukuy bears a Yucatec Maya name for a small songbird, formally assigned to this star in 2017 by the International Astronomical Union. It belongs to the Hyades cluster, the daughters of Atlas Greek myth turned into rain. A variable white A-class star about 150 light-years away, set right in the face of the celestial bull, its light shifts subtly over time, like a breath held and released.

Chamukuy lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
