A cool red giant in tiny Fornax, almost a thousand light-years away. M-type stars at this distance tend to be bloated, patient, with surfaces cooler than the Sun's. The light crossing Fornax tonight set out around the year 1050, when the taifa kingdoms were fragmenting Al-Andalus and El Cid was barely a child.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 15479 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
