Eleven hundred and seventy-seven light years lie between this orange giant and the observer. Its most recent photon set out when Europe was leaving the first millennium and Persian astronomers were refining their tables in Baghdad. It glows warmly in Perseus, the trademark hue of luminous K-types that have swollen after exhausting their core hydrogen —an aged, serene star, without flourish.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 15416 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
