Variable starIts story
71 Pegasi is a variable red M-type giant lying at 520 light-years, looking onto the great square of the winged horse. Its light wavers slowly as the stellar atmosphere swells and contracts, a pulsation that astronomers chase with patience. The constellation marks the celestial autumn equinox and harbors the Andromeda galaxy M31 in its vicinity. Tonight's light departed at the end of the 15th century.
