10 Andromedae is a cool red M-type giant, one of the reddest visible to the naked eye in its constellation. Its deeply warm, reddish light crosses 481 years to reach us —it set out when Cervantes was being born in Alcalá de Henares. It belongs to the family of old, swollen stars that have already left core hydrogen burning behind and move, slowly, toward the end.
Where it is and when to see it
10 Andromedae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
