In the modest Piscis Austrinus flickers this white A-type variable, some four hundred and twenty-three light years out. Its light departed when the Netherlands lived its Golden Age, at the height of Vermeer and Rembrandt. The slow pulsation now being detected is the physical trace of a time when painting still explained the world better than any equation.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 111809 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
