19 Cephei is a blue O-type supergiant, among the hottest and most massive stars on record: it weighs roughly twenty solar masses and burns at temperatures above thirty thousand degrees. It belongs to the Cep OB2 association, a nest of giant stars more than two thousand light-years away, and its spectrum shifts hour by hour under the lash of its own stellar wind. When this light departed, the Roman Empire had not yet fallen.
Where it is and when to see it
19 Cepheus lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
