On the northern throne of Cepheus burns a red M-type star, a deep ember in the middle of the firmament. Its light set out nine hundred and twenty-seven years ago, when the crusaders were besieging Jerusalem and the European kingdoms were turning their gaze upon the East. Far cooler than the Sun, it pours a grave, ripe red, like a coal hidden among the folds of the sky. To see it is to hear the muffled echo of a century that mixed swords, maps and prayers.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 108505 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
