What is HIP 108317

Red, cool, vast and trembling: an M-class variable lost in the silhouette of Cepheus, 2,452 light years away. The light now grazing the atmosphere set out around the year 426, in the midst of the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Its M class and slow variability sketch an aged supergiant that pulses unhurriedly, swelling and shrinking like a cosmic lung.

HIP 108317 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
