Nu Cephei is an extremely luminous white supergiant in the constellation of the Ethiopian King. Its brightness shifts gently —the subtle pulse of a massive star nearing the end of its life— and ranks it among the most distant stars still faintly visible to the unaided eye. In the sky, Cepheus eternally watches his queen Cassiopeia and his chained daughter Andromeda.
Where it is and when to see it
Nu Cepheus lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
