What is Omega Capricorni

Omega Capricorni is a luminous orange giant lying about eight hundred and forty light-years away, in the body of the Sea-Goat. It shines with several hundred times the Sun's output, though its distance dims the effect to a modest point in the southern zodiac. It is among the oldest beacons that Greek astronomers used to measure positions along the celestial belt.

Omega Capricorni lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 12° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 22° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 83° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 63° N.

It ranks no. 7 in brightness among the 48 stars of Capricornus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Deneb Algedi, the brightest: it lies about 17° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
