What is 40 Cygni
40 Cygni is a white A-type star some 266 light-years away, nested in the Northern Cross. At magnitude 5.63 it stays barely reachable to the eye from dark skies, within a Swan stretched along the Milky Way. Vega, Deneb and Altair form nearby the famed Summer Triangle, that bright landmark under which this modest star traces a cool point in the galactic river.
Where it is and when to see it
40 Cygni lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
