Fafnir

Its story

Fafnir is an orange giant 315 light-years from the Earth, set in the body of Draco, a constellation that winds its serpentine way through the circumpolar sky of the northern hemisphere. Its name was chosen by the International Astronomical Union in 2015, explicitly reviving Fáfnir, the dragon of Norse myth that hoarded a cursed treasure beside the river Rhine and was finally slain by the hero Sigurd. A young name for an old star, in a constellation that was already a dragon long before the word Europe even existed in anything resembling its current modern form.
