What is Lambda Norma
Lambda Normae is a white double in the small Carpenter's Square, that modest constellation Lacaille traced near the body of Scorpius. At 349 light-years, its combined magnitude lies right at the threshold of the naked eye: it can only be found from truly dark skies, far from cities. It belongs to a discreet corner of the Milky Way, dense with stars but poor in famous figures.
Where it is and when to see it
Lambda Norma lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June, when it culminates around midnight.

- From New York it culminates about 7° above the horizon.
- From Sydney it culminates about 81° above the horizon.
It can be seen from anywhere south of 47° N.
It ranks no. 13 in brightness among the 26 stars of Norma in our catalogue. To find it, start from Gamma 2 Norma, the brightest: it lies about 7° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
