What is Edasich

Edasich is an orange giant in Draco, 101 light-years away, a relatively close neighbour in cosmic terms. Its name comes from the Arabic «al-dhīkh», the hyena, part of an ancient celestial bestiary that peopled this stretch of sky with watchful creatures. In 2002 a giant planet was discovered orbiting it —one of the first proofs that aged giants also keep worlds in their care.

Where it is and when to see it

Edasich lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
