Variable starIts story
84 Ursae Majoris is a variable blue-white B-type star 290 light-years away in the Great Bear. To its high surface temperature it adds a subtle pulsation that modern photometry detects with patience. Its light, which left in the 18th century, crosses the most-visited region of the northern sky, that Bear which any trained eye recognises from memory.
