What is Iota Centauri
About 59 light-years away, on the shoulder of Centaurus, Iota Centauri shines with the calm whiteness of an A2 star. It belongs to the IC 2391 kinematic group, a family of sibling stars born together at least 45 million years ago from the same molecular cloud and still travelling in formation through the Milky Way. To look at it is to glimpse a stellar lineage written in shared motion.
Where it is and when to see it
Iota Centauri lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
