What is Taiyangshou

Taiyangshou preserves the ancient Chinese name given to this orange star in the Great Bear: literally, «the guardian of the Sun», a celestial sentinel watching over the source of daylight. It belongs to the orange giants, swollen by age and noticeably cooler than the Sun despite their luminous brightness. Its light crosses 184 light-years to reach us, a journey whose length matches almost exactly the entire history of photography as a recognised art.

Where it is and when to see it

Taiyangshou lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
