What is 59 Ursae Majoris
59 Ursae Majoris is a yellow-white F-type star in the great Bear, slightly hotter than the Sun. About 152 light-years away, its light left around 1874, when the transit of Venus was mobilising astronomical expeditions across the planet. It lives near the quadrilateral of the Plough but off to the side, one of those stars only discovered when the eye stops chasing the obvious ones.
Where it is and when to see it
59 Ursae Majoris lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
