49 Ursae Majoris dwells within the great figure of Ursa Major, the bowl-and-handle that has helped so many generations find north. A white A-class star, hotter and more luminous than the Sun, it shines at magnitude 5.06 from 377 light-years away. The light settling on the eye tonight left that surface in the era when Cassini was charting the rings of Saturn.
