What is 27 Hydrae
27 Hydrae is a yellow-white F-type sun, 222 light-years along the long winding body of Hydra. Hotter and more luminous than our own Sun, it shines with a pearly, almost metallic tone next to the red giants peppering the monster's tail. Its light reaches us from the late eighteenth century, dispatched while Europe debated the first written constitution of the modern world. It still travels, indifferent to our dates.
Where it is and when to see it
27 Hydrae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
