What is HIP 43370
In the small compass of Pyxis, a remnant of the ancient ship Argo, a yellow G-type star shines 752 light-years away. Its light set out when Marco Polo was returning from Cathay and bringing Europe tales of a fabulous Orient. Like the Sun in colour and temperature, it pulses with the same yellow serenity we know so well. It is a distant companion of our own star, separated from us by seven centuries of travel.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 43370 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
