Hot blue starIts story
A blue B-type star burns in Vela at about 1853 light-years, a distance its light began to cross around the second century, when the Roman Empire reached its greatest extent and ancient cartographers were tracing the first global trade routes. Its surface easily exceeds 10 000 degrees, tens of times hotter and thousands of times brighter than the Sun. It is a youthful blaze destined to live briefly and intensely.
