What is Gamma Mensa

Gamma Mensae is among the brightest stars of Mensa, the only constellation taking its name from an earthly geographical feature: Table Mountain rising beside Cape Town. It is an orange K-type giant some 102 light-years away, whose warm light shines in one of the most southerly and discreet corners of the sky.

Where it is and when to see it

Gamma Mensa lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
