What is HIP 15219

Within the hero Perseus, still brandishing Medusa's head, glows a yellow G-type giant nearly 790 light-years away. Its light set out when the Iberian Christian kingdoms were waging the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, in 1212. It shares its colour with the Sun but far exceeds it in size and luminosity, an elder sister swollen by the passage of stellar time.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 15219 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never sets and culminates about 89° up.
From New York it never sets and culminates about 80° up.
From Sydney it culminates about 5° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 39° S.

It ranks no. 41 in brightness among the 99 stars of Perseus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Mirfak, the brightest: it lies about 2° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
